November 2006                                                                         Issue 601

Saturday October 28 – A Spirited Night, an evening of Clairvoyance with Christine.  Over two dozen folks enjoyed snacks and beverages at the Black Nugget Museum.  Ian Hardy and Tom Wagner did a superb job behind the bar.  There was lots of food and the spirits did not let us down.

A special thanks to Marina and Isabelle for putting on our first very successful fundraiser.  Thank you Marilyn Johnson for your preparation of our delicious snacks, Vera from Take 5, for our poster, and Trish for your wonderful decorating talent. Of course many thanks to our Clairvoyant Christine who donated her time.  Thank you very much to all our volunteers for your time and donations of the wine.

Welcome to our new members:  Raelene Gold, George Telford, and June Ehmig

We have to be constantly promoting membership in the Society.  One of the best ways is for us as members is to encourage our friends and neighbors to be involved, not just financially.  Membership forms are available at The Archives office.

Our next meeting is November 21st at 7:00 pm at the home of Lil and Ian Hardy, 332 High Street, Ladysmith (corner of 4th Avenue and High).

Corporate memberships are actively encouraged.  Uforik computers are our newest corporate member.  Don’t be afraid to ask any business if they would like to belong to the Society.  If they want to join, it is $30.00 and we will give them a nice certificate of thanks.

Archives Office:  I have been opening the Archive office on a regular basis Tuesday and Thursday from10 am to 4 pm.  I have had tremendous help from Ian Hardy and Kit Willmot in organizing the office.  Our first huge project has been dealing with all the Chronicles.  I thank you very much Ian and Kit for all your help.

The new computer is in place.  We can scan documents and photographs with the new scanner.  So if you are speaking with people who would like to share their family collections with us, we can scan them and then return them.

Ladysmith Legion has generously donated their old copier to us.  They also gave us a computer.  Brian Grouhel also gave us a couple of computer towers.

The Black Nugget Museum was opened on many occasions this past summer.  We tried to have it open for special town events, such as Ladysmith Days, as well as the Thursday shopping evenings.  Once again a word of thanks to all those volunteers that supported it by acting as tour guides.  It certainly raised our profile in the community and also attracted new members.

Delegation to Council Meeting is hopefully on November 20th.   I have filled out the Request For Delegation Status Form and returned it to the Mayor’s secretary so that she can put us on the agenda  for that night.  I would like to have a meeting with the members before that date so we can review our issues before we attend.

Fund Raising

Ladysmith Centennial Book:  After Marina’s very generous donation of the rest of the Ladysmith Centennial books to the Society, they are now available in the Archives Office.  With Christmas coming these books would make ideal gifts.  The cost is $19.95 and all proceeds go directly to the Society.

Ladysmith Historical Family Cook Book has begun.  Thank you very much to Lil for creating our questionnaire.  Isabelle is taking this project and creating up a storm.  She has done seven interviews, collected the recipes and scanned pictures that represent the families.  I have transcribed the first four interviews and I will circulate to you all a sample of one.  Hopefully we can get more people doing interviews of the families of Ladysmith.  How is the rest of the committee doing?

If you want to contact me, or anyone in The Society you can call the office at 245-0100. We try to open the office from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Tue. and Thur. There is an answering machine, just leave a message and we will get back you.
