Events & Projects, current future and past

2008, the opening of the new Archive

We are presently working with the city staff to get our new Archive open.  Construction has been started transforming an old warehouse into our archive.  Not a derogatory comment, the place is ideal for our needs.  Solid concrete and steel.  In fact a large concrete vault.  More pictures will follow as work proceeds. (some images are clickable for larger pictures).  Tentative date is late August, early September.  We will be looking for volunteers to paint and help us move.

construction The insulation is now up, drywall will be next

July14, the drywall is up and a lot of the heating/AC ducts are in

Special Note;  not only do we need help.  We need more materials to improve the facility.  Specifically paint and floor coverings.  Any flooring or paint shops out there that can help us?  The challenge is out, we already have enough paint to put the primer on and the first coat, now we just need rollers and brushes to put it on.  Remember, we do give tax receipts for any donations!

Spring Plant Sale

plant saleAnother successful event.  Our first plant sale this spring. The members who contributed and grew the plants worked hard. Thank you to all who helped us.

Hopefully we can make this an annual event.

The Ladysmith Heritage Cook Book

cookbookThis is an ongoing project to raise funds for The Society. We have over 90 recipes and stories. The book was targeted to go to press in time for Christmas 2008 release. The first shipment sold out in one week!  We ordered another thousand books and they have been popular. Oh yes, the price is $12 from our office (plus shipping and handling) . It is also be available at retailers in Ladysmith, specifically Salamander Books, The Chronicle, Shar-Kare, Bean Time Cafe, the Jameson Centre and 49th Parallel Groceries. Get yours now!

We have been approached by a number of families to be included in Volume 2.  So, it is in the works. Click here for a printable submission form for Volume 2.  Check back often for news of this new project.

Volunteers Needed

At present we are opening the office 2 days a week. We need two categories of help; to man the office and to help us sort and catalog material. Call us or drop in if you can spend some time.

Commerce In Ladysmith video

For the February Trade Show we built a small 6 minute video of commerce in Ladysmith through the years.  If you want to view it, click here.  It does take a while to download though as it is 6 minutes in playing time.

Ladysmith Cemetery Tours.

cemetary tour

Cemetery tour started at 6 PM Friday Oct 26th 2007  from the Cemetery parking lot  by donation to the Ladysmith Historical Society. Even though it sounds gruesome, this bit of history can be vital to anyone in our area. We had good weather and certainly hope a good time was had by all.

Kit Willmot has decided to host the cemetery walks on the following Tuesdays in July: 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th all commencing at 2.00pm and on Saturday July 19th commencing at 10.00am as numbers are limited would you please book on 250 245 7611…..a $5 donation to Society appreciated.

Tours of Ladysmith Downtown and Waterfront.

Rob Johnson did a Down-Town Ladysmith  and Waterfront tour on Oct 20th and Nov 3rd 2007. Starting from the Royal Bank. Walk was in 2 parts. First part down town, length 45 min about 3/4 of a kilometer. Break for lunch. Second part 1:15-30 more strenuous walk about 1 hour and 15 min just over 2 kilometers. Included Transfer Beach, Comox Shop ( Art Centre) Maritime Society Dock, Maritime Museum, Old smelter site, top part of  First Ave  and Aggie Hall . Along the way a brief story about the artifacts located on the route. Hopefully we can organize another tour soon.  Tour by donation to the Ladysmith Historic Society.

Comox Logging Baldwin #11 donated to The Town

Sadly the Ladysmith Historical Railway Society has wound down. All the artifacts applicable to town have been given to us. As the "custodian" of the major collection of artifacts for the Town of Ladysmith we have already received a great deal of photographs, tools and real artifacts. Howie Davis (H. Davis Trucking) has donated enough material to build a cover for #11 and the Maritime Society has promised to do the work. We hope to get involved in this very important project for the town.

Wedding dresses & fashions through the decades

The Historical Society, in co-operation with Take 5 Community Newsmagazine put on a display of turn of the century to 1970 wedding dresses. We had a display of wedding dresses at the Eagle's Hall.

Shown at right is a very small part of the collection of Lois Anderson.
